The B5 RS4 comes with a BOSE speaker system as standard with an array of optional head units, however most of these components are starting to get tired and failing after 10+ years so it's only a matter of time before the need to replace the speakers becomes an issue. My drivers side door speaker had been crackling on and off pretty much since I got the car, sometimes I just wouldn't bother turning the stereo on at all but ultimately it needed replacing so I figured I'd replace the lot.
I've no idea if the BOSE speakers are available from Audi but if they are I'd expect them to cost a small fortune so aftermarket is where the options are, and not many options at that! Basically the BOSE system runs at 2ohms and there aren't that many speakers out there that run at that level so the options for an 'easy' upgrade are small. After some research on the Audi forums it seems that the offerings from Infinity are a good option so I went for a pair of 4032cf for the front and 6532i for the rear.
Fitting is fairly simple but not straight forward. Door card removal is a breeze, 5 screws for the front then lift up, 4 screws for the rear then lift up. The pictures below show the position of the screws. Unclip all the necessary wiring and door release cable and the card is then free to work on. I used the OEM speaker rings for the front, modifying them a little to accommodate the 4032cf speaker, then using the OEM rubber to help seal it in the OEM position. The rears are easier as I just screwed the speakers to the back of the OEM mounting ring then mounted that back into position on the door card, however on the rear the new speakers are a little bit chunky so they took some effort to get back into position on the door.
I called this an upgrade, to be honest it's not really an upgrade as they sound no better then the Bose speakers, but at lease they don't crackle any more! One day I'd like to get a proper install, but with the Milltek system I'm more than happy to hear the car TBH!!
